There are only so many ways that you can be an American:
This means that any and all claims to white supremacy, even very subtle ones, are both evil and irrational. It’s not enough to condemn the Walmart shooter. We must also ask God to search our hearts to reveal to us any subtle traces of racism or prejudice or racial or ethnic or cultural superiority that we have yet to deal with, to be brutally honest in our self-evaluation, and to ask God to do the surgery required to remove any traces of these tendencies from our own thinking. It does no good to strike out against someone else's “big sin” when a more subtle version of that same sin lies hidden within the recesses our own soul. Do we think that those of a different culture or ethnic group or race or language or custom are somehow inferior or “less American” than we are? If so, then we need to be willing to deal with our own heart issues. A subtle trace of ethnic or racial or cultural superiority is just white supremacy (or some other variety of supremacy) in germ form. The enemy is not “them”, it’s “us”. “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting”. (Psalm 139:23-24) I am asking God to search my heart. I hope that you will do the same.
